Ectopic Pregnancy: One of the Complications Of Pregnancies

January 7th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Apurva Shree asked:

Ectopic pregnancy is one of the pregnancy complications that may occur in some women. The fertilized ovum travels from the fallopian tubule and gets implanted in the uterine lining during a normal pregnancy. In ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized ovum is not implanted in the uterine lining, but may get implanted in the ovary, fallopian tubule, abdomen, cervix or any other part of the pelvic area.

The fact that the pregnancy occurs outside the uterus in an organ that is not conducive to its development, ensures that such pregnancies cannot develop into a birth. The pregnancy is considered a high risk, as the organ that the ovum has implanted in, can burst, which can cause internal bleeding which could have a grim outlook. More often, the pregnancy occurs in the fallopian tube, due to it being blocked or damaged. This is why such a pregnancy is also referred to as a tubal pregnancy. In most women, such pregnancies result in a spontaneous abortion, but in some, clinical intervention may be required.

Causes of Ectopic Pregnancy

It is said that, those who have pelvic inflammatory disease and those who have suffered tubal damage due to surgery, scar tissue are more prone to suffering from ectopic pregnancy. Endometrioses can also be another cause. The cells from the uterine lining may get detached in some cases and get attached to other organs outside the uterus. Those who are using invitro fertilization may also be at risk. Those who have a history of such pregnancies also are under the high risk category.

How It Is Diagnosed

The women who have ectopic pregnancy have similar pregnancy symptoms as those with a normal pregnancy. The symptoms may include sore breasts, nausea, frequent urination and missed period. They may however have to watch out for other symptoms, such as pain in the abdomen and the shoulders. The pain may be sharp and stabbing, concentrated on one side of the pelvic area. Other symptoms include vaginal spotting, dizziness and there may also be low back pain. Some women experience pain while having a bowel movement. Most women have severe pain in the lower abdomen and heavy bleeding.

Diagnosis can be done by an examination done by the doctor, who can identify smaller uterine size than normal as well as the abnormal swellings. In most cases, a laparoscopy or a Laparotomy is done to solve the problem. In some women, only the pregnancy sac is removed, while in others, the entire tubule is removed. This is one of the dreaded pregnancy problems that some have to deal with.

It is therefore advised that, pregnant women read as many books and journals they can in order to stay informed. It is a fact that though there may be a risk for a repeat ectopic pregnancy, the chances are that the women go on to have a normal pregnancy and childbirth the next time.

Fears Concerning Ectopic Pregnancy

January 6th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Apurva Shree asked:

Ectopic pregnancy is not a normal pregnancy. In ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg does not implant in the uterus, but in the outside tissues. In most cases, it implants in the fallopian tube.

Chances of ectopic pregnancy increases with age, fallopian tube surgery, or pelvic inflammatory disease, however a vaginal ultrasound and scan or ELISA (urinary test) can successfully diagnose it.

Although, ectopic pregnancy needs immediate medical attention, death is rare in such condition, since early detection in first trimester of the pregnancy period is possible for it. After detection, treatment can be done with injection methotrexate, or laprosopic or laprotomy surgery.

Monitoring Symptoms

There are different symptoms for ectopic pregnancy. Woman with an ectopic pregnancy at times have abdominal or pelvic pain, dizziness, low blood pressure, and vaginal bleeding. Hormones levels of the pregnant woman need to be checked, if you suspect an ectopic pregnancy.

The hormone HCG is higher in a normal pregnancy in comparison to ectopic pregnancy. However, the progesterone hormone tends to be lower. To monitor the hormone levels, doctors ask the patients to get their blood tests done on a daily basis for a few days. To check internal bleeding an ultrasound is also advised by the doctors.

Treatment

Good news is that ectopic pregnancy can be treated without any permanent damage, but sometimes in advanced pregnancies, it may rupture. Then doctors perform surgery. Surgery can be done using laprotomy (open surgery) or laproscopy (pin hole surgery), depending on the size of the ectopic pregnancy. Earlier, doctors used to remove the entire fallopian tube while removing ectopic pregnancy, now only a part of the fallopian tube is removed.

Prevention

Ectopic pregnancy can surely be treated, but there is no known way to prevent it. One can decrease the risk by using condoms or getting pelvis area checked in case of any urinary tract infection. Yearly medical examinations are necessary, if you use an IUD.

Any infection during pregnancy can be quite troubling for the mother as well for the child. Ectopic pregnancy should be detected and removed as early as the first trimester when you are experiencing your first signs of pregnancy. Ignoring the symptoms of pregnancy week by week can lead to trouble in the later stages. Remember to get a thorough medical checkup done in the first few weeks of your pregnancy itself. Be informed, keep safe, and enjoy your journey to motherhood.

Weekly Pregnancy Calendar- An Important Record

January 6th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Apurva Shree asked:

Pregnancy is a miracle of nature that brings a mother at par with the creator. It is the happiest and a most exciting moment in the life of a woman. Of course the sign of pregnancy causes scary and nervous feelings too since you don’t know what is happening in side your body. It is always better to have knowledge of pregnancy and ways to make it better and healthier. Weekly pregnancy calendar can be fine guide on your journey to motherhood. There are many websites that offer pregnancy calendars for free offloading. They offer a precise knowledge of how the baby grows inside a mother’s womb and developing baby’s weekly milestones.

Weekly Pregnancy Calendar

A weekly pregnancy calendar is a chronological record of the changes a woman and her fetus will undergo during the course of her pregnancy. It describes at length the growth and development of growing baby and expected changes in the mother’s body with advancing pregnancy, on a weekly basis. At the early sign of pregnancy, print out one such web weekly pregnancy calendar and put it on a spot where you can see it daily for monitoring your pregnancy progress.

Importance of a weekly pregnancy calendar

A visit to a doctor after experiencing the early signs of pregnancy will confirm your pregnancy. The doctor will calculate your probable due date of delivery. This date is usually about forty weeks from the first day of your last menstruation. A very small number of babies are actually born on their exact due date. Most are born two weeks earlier or two weeks later than the expected due date. This is where the weekly pregnancy calendar becomes important. It helps in keeping the dates of conception, expected due date, track of baby’s development through various stages of growth per week and monitors mother’s health by telling of body changes you will experience every week.

A full term of pregnancy is separated and divided into three trimesters.

First trimester. First week to twelfth week.

Second trimester. Thirteenth week to twenty- sixth weeks.

Third trimester. Twenty seventh week till the date of baby’s delivery.

As the delivery date draws nearer, there will be more pressure on the pregnancy. In last two weeks the baby takes birthing position and pushes down in the cervical canal resulting in woman experiencing change in balance while walking. During this time a mother provides antibodies to baby for fighting off infections. A mother may experience discomfort and pronounced contractions or false labor. A weekly pregnancy calendar is of utmost importance at this time as it keeps a track of her and her baby’s progressive developments. It helps in explaining when to contact doctor and when to sleep off the discomfort. Breaking of amniotic sac is the time for notifying medical health care provider for it signifies the end of pregnancy.

Pregnancy Journal - the Best Friend of a Pregnant Woman

January 6th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Apurva Shree asked:

The best way to keep you updated with memories of your pregnancy is through a pregnancy journal. For those who are already enjoying their motherhood, sharing the personal benefits by keeping a pregnancy journal to others can prove to be extremely beneficial. Pregnancy journal or diary, allows oneself to analyze how pregnancy brought changes to their lives and what they learnt about themselves and also the environment in which they are living.

Pen Down Your Emotions:

Many would ask the question, why keep a journal at all? The reasons can be many. You can control your physical pain in a journal; you can give way to your creative talent in a journal and even have a record of your expenditures and so on. A pregnant mother can write so many things to her baby who has not seen the world yet in the pregnancy journal.

The best thing with pregnancy journal is that you can write anything, infact everything that has brought some changes in your life. You can write what you ate on a particular day or what you wore to flaunt your pregnancy. Everything that you think is important and forms an important aspect of your life can be penned down in a pregnancy journal. Pregnancy week by week reports can find an easy place in your pregnancy journal. There are so many changes taking place in your body. Feeling of dizziness in first week or cramps and back pins occurring frequently during trimester of pregnancy can be easily sited in your pregnancy journal.

For women who have a flair for writing maintaining a pregnancy journal will not be a big problem for them. Your first sign of pregnancy can really refresh your memories when you think of those wonderful days. Pregnancy is a wonderful experience and as a woman you should be proud of giving birth to a new life on earth. It is a fact that pregnancy is not a smooth journey. There are many unexpected happenings, joys, triumphs and days of continuous pain associated with pregnancy. Writing pregnancy health issues on a pregnancy journal can really help your emotions flow through the power of pen and onto the paper. Pregnancy journal can give you a much needed relief and outlets which even your near and dear ones sometimes cannot.

Pregnancy journal is the perfect outlet of emotions for every pregnant mother. Doctors will tell you to always remain happy during pregnancy. Your behavior can sometimes be very irrational and though not intentionally, hurt anyone near you. But with pregnancy journal, you can always trace down the cause of this irrational behavior later on. Remember, your interest to pen down everything on the pregnancy journal can be passed on to your children, as it a very interesting and healthy habit.

Pregnancy is a critical time

January 5th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Tony Edwards asked:

Pregnancy is such a critical time. A woman’s body is drastically changing and the baby inside is creating new demands on the mother’s body. You want to do everything you can right to make sure that your baby is healthy and has a good start in life.

Some birth defects have been linked to the lack of vitamins and minerals. How do you pick the correct prenatal vitamins to ensure a healthy pregnancy? Should you just rely on your physician or should you know more? Should you take prenatals even after your pregnancy? We looked deeper into what a mother really needs to know before and after pregnancy.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is such a critical time, and you want to do everything you can to provide the “just right” array of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Pregnancy and breastfeeding place tremendous demands on your body and can deplete omega-3 fatty acids. Target each stage of pregnancy with the perfect balance of nutrients.

Studies have shown that moms who receive the recommended amount of DHA during pregnancy have babies with increased attention spans throughout the first two years of life. The benefits of taking omega-3 DHA before, during, and after pregnancy are truly amazing.

Remember, your baby will take what it needs first to develop and grow, and therefore, your body may suffer if you are not getting enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals needed throughout pregnancy.

Healthy Baby

Every vitamin, every mineral, every nutrient has an important job to do now, for you and your growing baby. Your growing baby’s development depends on it. The right vitamins help build your baby’s bones and teeth and ensure your baby has a healthy start in life.

Eating a variety of healthy foods is important, but with hectic schedules, morning sickness, and the changing nutritional demands of your developing baby, it can be difficult to achieve the right nutritional balance. Nutrition is also critically important during recovery and while you are breastfeeding your newborn baby.

Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are packed full of nutrients that will help support and nourish your growing child and your body during pregnancy. How do you determine which prenatal vitamins are right for you? What do you look for in prenatal vitamins?

Prenatal vitamin supplements are vitamin supplements that a woman can take on a daily basis to ensure that she is obtaining appropriate quantities of essential nutrients during pregnancy. Prenatal nutrition is important but nausea and vomiting can cause women to miss meals and important nutrients from both a balanced diet and prenatal vitamin supplementation.

Just picking up some ordinary vitamins at the drugstore is not enough for a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins contain important nutrients in stronger dosages than regular multivitamin supplements (even those formulated for women). A good vitamin does not take the place of eating nutritiously but it can balance the scales in your favor, and your baby’s too. Researchers at the University of Maryland have noticed that many commonly prescribed prenatal vitamins do not dissolve well resulting in insufficient absorption of the nutrients.

The March of Dimes reports that birth defects of the spine, skull, and brain, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, are more likely to occur if the mother does not get sufficient folic acid during the first few weeks of her pregnancy - even before she knows she is pregnant.

Prenatal vitamins can reduce risk of childhood cancers and omega fish oil intake has been linked to higher IQ in offspring. New research from the Boston University School of Medicine is recommending higher intakes of vitamin D as so many are deficient. The women’s levels of vitamin D were related to the frequency of milk consumption and prenatal vitamin use.

Increased zinc and vitamin B6 levels can boost immunities needed after pregnancy and sufficient B6 has been shown to provide infant growth advantages. This B vitamin can prevent neural tube defects when taken early in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Zinc supports normal growth and development during pregnancy.

Calcium and magnesium supplementation are so important during pregnancy. A good prenatal vitamin should include folic acid and calcium, among other nutrients that are important to a healthy pregnancy and baby. In the last trimester of pregnancy, skeletal growth is highest and the fetus draws calcium directly from the mother’s stores. In addition, clinical trials have shown that adequate calcium during pregnancy lowers blood pressure and may reduce the incidence of premature births. Magnesium promotes the health of bones and may help maintain normal blood pressure and muscle comfort during pregnancy.

Folic acid is the most commonly prescribed prenatal supplement for the months prior to becoming pregnant as well and it is essential for the health and growth of the baby, especially for brain functions.

The female body’s requirement for vitamin C increases during pregnancy as this vitamin promotes the normal growth of the baby and supports building strong bones and teeth. It also supports the absorption of another key nutrient during pregnancy: iron.

Iron is recommended to prevent the mother suffering from anemia due to the demands that the baby puts on her iron consumption. Iron is an important mineral and is responsible for helping the mother and the baby’s blood to carry oxygen. Iron deficiencies can lead to severe birth defects for the baby.

Women have an increased requirement for biotin during pregnancy, and a biotin deficiency may occur in as many as 50 percent of pregnant women. This deficiency may increase the risk of birth defects.

Adequate amounts of vitamin A help to promote the health of the baby by promoting normal growth and development of the embryo and fetus, and supporting genes that determine the sequential development of organs in embryonic development. Beta-carotene is a nutrient from plants that the body converts into vitamin A.

Prenatal vitamins can be taken after pregnancy to provide a well-balanced supplementation program. With a mother’s hectic schedule and lack of time, prenatal vitamins are a perfect choice for an after pregnancy supplement regimen.

The correct prenatals are essential for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Doing your research on prenatal vitamins can be very rewarding and time well spent to ensure an easy and successful pregnancy.

Heartburn Remedies During Pregnancy That Can Help Relieve Your Pregnancy Heartburn Misery!

January 3rd, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Hannah Bajor.C.N.M.,M.S.N. Pregnancy Success & Health Coach asked:

Heartburn relief during pregnancy is a common concern many pregnant women have. Read on to see what you what heartburn remedies during pregnancy are available.

What causes early pregnancy heartburn?

Heartburn in early pregnancy is a common complaint. The hormone progesterone is released as soon a woman becomes pregnant and can cause many early pregnancy symptoms which include pregnancy heartburn. Progesterone causes relaxation of the cardiac sphincter of the stomach which is the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus (food pipe). Relaxation of this muscle allows for some gastric acid and food to flow backwards and re-enter the esophagus (food pipe). Gastric acid irritates the lining of the esophagus causing a burning sensation in the center of the chest called pregnancy heartburn.

As your baby grows bigger and takes up more room in the abdominal area, the stomach itself is displaced and squashed. The growing uterus can permanently press on the cardiac sphincter of the stomach and allow gastric juices and food to constantly leak back into the esophagus (wind pipe) which may cause severe heartburn during pregnancy.

Heartburn remedies during pregnancy

Heartburn relief during pregnancy can be achieved by eating yogurt or drinking a glass of milk.

Try a tablespoon of honey in a glass of warm milk for pregnancy heartburn relief.

Eat smaller more frequent meals throughout the day rather than three large meals.

Avoid spicy, greasy, fatty foods, peppers and tomatoes produce extra gastric acid causing pregnancy heartburn.

Avoid foods that relax the cardiac sphincter of the stomach such as alcohol, peppermint, garlic, and chocolate.

Avoid eating for at least two hours before going to bed.

Do not lie down after eating to prevent the food from the stomach flowing back into your esophagus causing pregnancy heartburn.

Mild over-the-counter antacids such as Mylanta or Tums may prove helpful in relieving heartburn pregnancy symptom.

If your heartburn symptoms are severe or accompanied by headache or swelling (especially if you are later on in pregnancy) consult with your health care provider immediately as you may have pre-eclampsia of pregnancy.

Sleeping with extra pillows under your head to keep your stomach lower than your esophagus (food pipe) works very well to give you a better start to the day and a better nights sleep.

One of the most effective heartburn remedies during pregnancy is to try to prevent heartburn developing in the first place. The healthier you are prior pregnancy and the healthier you eat during pregnancy can have a direct correlation to the amount of pregnancy symptoms you have. Ovarian Cysts And Pregnancy: Protect Your Health And Fertility

January 1st, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Mary Parker asked:

Women get very nervous about going through a term of pregnancy when they have been diagnosed as having ovarian cysts. But it is not an uncommon phenomenon and many women have to learn to go through the experience. It is pointless to try and console them by giving those statistics because they will still worry and be tense about this mixture of ovarian cysts and Pregnancy. However, such a state of mind is not desirable during pregnancy and women with such tensions should try and sort out their fears with their gynecologists or counselors.

It is extremely essential for pregnant women with ovarian cysts to understand everything about their condition so that recovery is hastened and also so that they receive the correct treatment for their cysts during their term of pregnancy.

Complications of Ovarian Cysts

There are two varieties of ovarian cysts which can be found during pregnancy. The benign variety and the malignant one. Benign cysts are not a cause of worry, but the malignant type could be dangerous during the delicate stage of pregnancy. So what you should clarify right at the beginning is the sort of ovarian cyst you are carrying, along with your baby.

Ovarian cysts treatment will depend on the type that they are and the severity of the complication pertaining to them. There are even cysts which get cured by themselves. But you must be careful to monitor the state of your ovarian cysts so that complications such as the rupture of a cyst during pregnancy do not occur. Sometimes a complication manifests itself quite suddenly and unexpectedly, so even ovarian cysts which are benign should be monitored with care during pregnancy.

Ovarian cysts and pregnancy forms a combination which is quite dangerous, so you must seek to get treatment for it of the highest order. It is not uncommon for an ovarian rupture to result in a miscarriage and large cysts could cause all manners of problems. So it is essential that medical intervention is made in a timely manner. In order to get the optimum level of treatment, you should consider all options available to you for the medical treatment of Ovarian Cysts during your term of pregnancy.

Treatment

Ovarian cyst treatment during pregnancy will not be the same as normal treatment because some of the drugs that are usually prescribed and some forms of treatment could pose a threat to the child not yet born. It would therefore be unwise of you, during pregnancy, to use over the counter drugs; painkillers in particular. Also, you will have fewer options to fall back on if your preferred form of medical treatment is the conventional one. In fact, whichever form of treatment you decide to follow, if it is from the conventional stream of medicine, each will have its own hazards.

Some of the methods of treatment followed by conventional forms of healthcare, as for instance surgery, cannot be used during pregnancy. This is why; it is always safer to pursue alternative treatment streams which cure naturally, when trying to combat ovarian cysts at the time of pregnancy. Amongst the alternatives, the best way to cure your ovarian cysts during pregnancy is possibly through the holistic approach. The Holistic Approach will definitely be good for you as it hardly creates any problems during treatment even during a patient`s pregnancy. Other advantages include:

1. No other treatment is as safe as the Holistic Approach one. There is no hassle in using this method even during pregnancy and both mother and the unborn child remain completely safe.

2. It helps to root out the basic cause of the illness and that ensures that there is no recurrence of the problem even in future. This contrasts sadly with the treatment you get through conventional medical systems which may say anything, but are only able to address the symptoms. So you may find yourself in a situation where the original condition again arises during critical moments of your pregnancy because it has never been fully eradicated. The holistic approach, on the other hand, is more successful in actually curing the ovarian cysts during pregnancy rather than just giving you temporary relief.

3. Natural techniques used while treating this condition are efficient while not being as aggressive as the conventional treatment forms. The multidimensional aspects of the holistic approach ensure that it does not restrict its activities to treatment forms which are hackneyed but rather explores different treatment avenues which helps it succeed.

4. It stops any further complications from arising during pregnancy on account of the ovarian cysts. There are some real threats which can crop up because of this condition, such as ruptures. But the holistic approach allows the patient to get over these threats by keeping control of the medical situation. Thus, even women suffering from ovarian cysts can go through a safe pregnancy.

Another point to note is that the holistic approach can help relieve anxiety and stress in women during their pregnancy because it helps them face the problem of ovarian cysts on the emotional level. The practitioner will relieve you of your doubts and fears by acting as your counselor and advising you on options for treatment. The confidence you will gain from the light and jestful interactions with him will not only ultimately cure your ovarian cysts but will help you have an enjoyable pregnancy.

Holistic practitioners will review your condition relating to ovarian cysts and pregnancy and will treat you accordingly. But what you have to definitely do is to consult him before you embark on any method of treatment so that all risks are avoided and the recovery process is speeded up.
