Buying crib bedding isn’t too complex, and there are just a few safety measures to keep in mind. A number of child protection groups have recommended to select and utilize crib bedding. The guidelines are intended to keep from being endangered when they sleep, because they cannot defend against choking on their own.

It is recommended that babies sleep on their backs with no extra cushions in the crib. Stuffed animals, pillows, quilts, comforters, and other soft bedding items are nice decorations, but you should not be kept in the crib when your is in it. To follow this guidance strictly, only a mattress covered with fitted sheets should be in the crib. If you do decide to use a blanket in your crib, make sure to tuck it tightly underneath the mattress at the bottom. It should also come up no further than your child’s chest.

Crib bumpers are a subject of debate, although they’re usually attached securely to the crib rails and unlikely to impede a baby’s breathing, many pediatricians still advise against their use to optimize airflow. Many alternative bumpers have started to emerge in an attempt to solve such problems. The confusion over crib bumpers in part stems from the fact that even now they are packaged together with most baby bedding. Because of the conflicting information and opinions surrounding crib bumpers, parents are advised to use their discretion and decide whether or not bumpers are appropriate in their situation.

Up until the age of twelve months American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on minimal bedding for the crib should be followed as until that age children are not mobile enough to push bedding away from their face. Before your baby is a year old,you may need to make some changes to his crib bedding to ensure safety. Once babies are able to sit upright–and certainly by the time they can pull up to standing–the mattress height should be lowered and any items which can be used as steps should be removed. Crib bumpers can be a stepping stool for babies to climb out of the crib and injure themselves, so remove them to prevent such accidents.

After your child’s first birthday there is a much lower risk of SIDS, meaning that you can add items to make the crib more comfortable and decorative. You can also find blankets or a bed skirt to go with your baby nursery decor. Small cuddly blankets are suitable for the child’s warmth and comfortableness. While pillows act as a companion for many children under the age group of 2,most children prefer stuffed toys with them at night.
