Kaneto Shind? (?? ?? Shind? Kaneto?, born April 28, 1912), Hiroshima, Japan) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter.
Born in Hiroshima, Shind? first joined the film developing lab of Shink? Kinema in 1934. He later moved to the art department and began writing scripts on his own. He worked with Kenji Mizoguchi on several films, most notably being in charge of the sets for The 47 Ronin. He made his debut as a screenwriter with the film Nanshin josei in 1940. Moving to Sh?chiku, he began writing scripts for K?zabur? Yoshimura, scoring a critical hit with A Ball at the Anjo House in 1947. Shind? and Yoshimura left Sh?chiku in 1950 to form the independent production company Kindai Eiga Ky?kai. In 1951, he made his debut as a director with Aisai monogatari.
Shind? has often made films dealing with Hiroshima or the atomic bomb, such as Children of Hiroshima, Lucky Dragon No. 5, and Sakura-tai Chiru. Many of his works also feature strong female characters (some demonic, as in Onibaba), many of which were played by the actress Nobuko Otowa (1925–1994), who eventually became his wife. Working in many genres, he even filmed a documentary about his mentor, Kenji Mizoguchi: The Life of a Film Director. Still active in his nineties, his recent films have focused on issues faced by the elderly. He has directed over 40 films and written over 200 scripts.
From 1972 to 1981 he served as chair of the Japan Writers Guild.
Nobuko Otowa (1 October 1925 — 22 December 1994) was a Japanese film actress. She appeared in 134 films between 1950 and 1994. She was married to film director Kaneto Shind?. She posthumously won the award for best supporting actress at the 19th Japan Academy Prize for A Last Note, having been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer during its production.
Osamu Takizawa (?? ? Takizawa Osamu?, 13 November 1906 — 22 June 2000) was a Japanese actor. He was born in Ushigome, Tokyo, Japan. Starting at the Tsukiji Little Theater, Takizawa participated in a number of theatrical troupes before forming Gekidan Mingei with J?kichi Uno. His was praised for his performance in Death of a Salesman and also directed a version of The Diary of Anne Frank. Perhaps his most notable film role was in Fires on the Plain.
