When Choosing a Baby Monitor ” Things you Should Consider

In todays society a baby monitor is pretty much a must have tool if you are about to have a baby or if you have a very young child already. The baby monitor will alert you to when baby is needing fed, or changed and in general provides you with peace of mind while you get on with other chores etc around the home.
When buying, there are a number of points to consider beforehand:
- how much you want to invest (the more you spend the more features the monitor will have)
- the type of house you have ” if its large and/or has concrete walls, you will need a monitor with strong transmission capacity
- if you wish to see your child you will need an audio monitor with video capabilities
What Types of Monitor are There?
- Audio only: the basic type of monitor will offer audio only. You can have one or two receivers with this type, the two option gives a little more flexibility.
- Movement with audio capability: this type consists of three parts ” the receiver, the transmitter and a detector pad which is placed under the babies mattress
- Audio with video capability: in addition to some of the above features this type offers a video camera which can be placed near to your baby. Some of the more expensive types now offer infra red, which allows you to see your child in the dark.
Important Things to Consider
- The power source: battery operated monitor equipment is the best for mobility but can use a lot of batteries in a short space of time. So, the best options are either a/c adapter with battery combination or rechargeable battery option.
- A volume control: useful when you do not wish to hear every single sound that your baby makes all of the time anyhow.
- LED lights on the receiver: this can be useful when you are unable to hear the receiver. If your child wakes for example then any noise will be shown by the LED lights flashing.
- Multi-channel: this will allow you to find a channel in your area that has less interference from the likes of telephones.
- Frequency: the cheaper options operate on 49 MHz, which can actually lead to there being more interference from other radio devices. 900 MHz are better as they are less likely to suffer the same levels of interference. The best are 2.4 GHz however.
- A low battery indicator: obviously very useful.
- Size: if you move around a lot then a receiver that can be easily carried around with you is ideal. Also, if you travel often with your child its important to have a baby monitor that is light weight and easily packed.
- Two receivers: handy to have if you want to leave one permanently some where like your bedroom and the other you can carry around.
